It was our name that inspired us. The Wheatsheaf was the symbol of our rich agricultural history and the Inn has been serving victuals to both drovers and the carriage trade for centuries. And those drovers, who nowadays arrive in a variety of ancient and modern 4x4s, and the carriage trade, which now motors up from the metropolises, are still dropping by. And so we organised an exclusive Christmas Farmer’s Market for them.

It was clear, it came in a Martini glass and the dominant taste was cucumber. It was, and I kid you not, a Bloody Mary. It was the most unusual cocktail from the 13 entrants at the third annual Cotswold Life Bloody Mary competition, held at the Wheatsheaf Inn, in Northleach. This year the Hollow Bottom Pub in Guiting Power was the worthy winner but it was the clear drink made from strained tomatoes that put judges gardener Sir Roddy Llewellyn, television star Dom Joly, Daily Telegraph hotel critic Fiona Duncan and Cotswold Life columnist Adam Edwards in a dither. After checking the dictionary – and the Savoy Cocktail Book – it was ruled ineligible although it was given an honorary mention by Cotswold Life editor Mike Lowe, who presented the prestigious trophy.
